Cantor Haim LevyCantor Haim Levy came to New York from Israel in 1990. Before becoming the cantor at CSJE in 1996, he served at Whitestone Hebrew Center for five years. Cantor Levy brings to the pulpit a thorough and extensive knowledge of the nusach (melodies) for all the religious services. In addition, he is an expert baal koreh (Torah reader), with a clear and precise manner of chanting which enables congregants to follow along with ease. In addition to being an excellent hazzan, Cantor Levy is an accomplished musician. His musical training began as a young child with the study of piano at the Music Conservatory in his home town of Hadera, Israel. After completing his army service and receiving his degree in history and political science from Bar-Ilan University, Cantor Levy studied at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv, focusing on voice and vocal conducting. He also served as the executive director of the Music Conservatory in Hadera for ten years. During his tenure at CSJE, Cantor Levy organized "Koleinu," which is now the ICCJ choir. Under his leadership the choir has grown in size to 19 voices, singing in four-part harmony. Cantor Levy is known for the thorough manner in which he prepares bar and bat mitzvah students. He also is willing to teach trop (cantillation) classes in both Torah and haftorah to interested adults. Cantor Levy and his wife, Yemima, have five children, two who live in Israel full-time, one who is currently attending Bar Ilan University, and two who reside here in New York. The Levys are also the very proud grandparents of seven grandchildren.
